About AT&T network unlocks
AT&T operates the United States' second-largest postpaid network and publishes one of the most clearly documented unlock policies in the industry. Per AT&T's Wireless Phone Unlocking Policy, a device qualifies for an unlock when it is no longer associated with any installment agreement, the account has been paid current, the device has been active on AT&T's network for the period AT&T's policy specifies (postpaid and prepaid have different windows — refer to the AT&T policy page for the current numbers), and the device has not been reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud.
What DeviceDecoded does
We submit your IMEI through the manufacturer's official unlock channel — Apple, Samsung, Google, etc. — rather than AT&T's online request form. The result is a permanent factory-level unlock: the device is whitelisted on the manufacturer's database, so the unlock survives factory resets, OS updates, SIM changes, and international roaming. No software is installed and no rooting or jailbreaking is involved.
Common AT&T gotchas
- Next or Installment financing — devices on AT&T Next or another financing arrangement must be paid off before AT&T will authorise an unlock through its own portal.
- Active service window — AT&T's policy has historically required a minimum active-service period; this is the most common reason their portal rejects an unlock request that otherwise looks eligible.
- Account in arrears — outstanding balances must be cleared.
- Cricket and Cricket-branded devices — Cricket is an AT&T-owned prepaid brand; Cricket devices follow Cricket's policy, not AT&T's.
