What Every Legitimate IMEI Check Should Do for Free
A basic IMEI check should, at minimum, return this information without payment:
Device identification from TAC The first 8 digits of the IMEI (the TAC — Type Allocation Code) are public information, registered with the GSMA. Any check tool can return manufacturer and model from the TAC without paying for any database access. If a service wants you to pay just to find out the device model, look elsewhere.
Basic format validation Confirming the IMEI passes the Luhn algorithm is a mathematical operation requiring no database access. Free.

Devices from unknown sources: The less you know about the seller's history, the more comprehensive your check should be. An unknown seller on a marketplace with no prior history warrants a more thorough paid check.
Warranty verification for insurance or accounting: If you are verifying devices for insurance or business purposes, paid reports provide the detailed records needed for documentation.
What No IMEI Check Can Tell You
Regardless of whether it is free or paid, no IMEI check can:
- Guarantee the phone was not stolen if the theft was not reported
- Predict future blacklisting (a clean phone today can be blacklisted tomorrow if payments default)
- Reveal private party reports that were not submitted to a carrier or database we include
