Understanding Legacy Apple Serials

Until late 2020, Apple used a predictable 12-character serial number format that encoded meaningful information about the device. By decoding these characters, you can determine the factory where the device was assembled, the week it was manufactured, and its exact model configuration.

Apple has since transitioned to randomised serial numbers for newer products, making this decoding method applicable only to devices manufactured before the change. Our tool handles the legacy format and extracts all available data from it.

Does this work with newer Apple devices?

No. Apple transitioned to randomised serial numbers starting in late 2020. Newer devices (iPhone 12 and later, M1 Macs and later) use a format that cannot be decoded. This tool is specifically for the older 12-character format.

What can I learn from a legacy serial number?

You can identify the manufacturing factory (e.g., Foxconn Zhengzhou, Quanta Shanghai), the approximate manufacture date (year and week), and the exact model and configuration of the device.

Why did Apple change the serial number format?

Apple moved to randomised serials for privacy and security reasons. The old format leaked manufacturing details, and the predictable pattern could theoretically be exploited to generate valid serial numbers.
