Understanding iCloud Lock

What is iCloud Activation Lock?

iCloud Activation Lock is a security feature built into every Apple device running iOS 7 or later. It is automatically enabled when you turn on Find My iPhone (FMI). Once active, it ties the device to the owner's Apple ID — meaning no one can erase, reactivate, or use the device without the original owner's Apple ID credentials.

This feature was designed by Apple to deter theft and protect personal data. If a device is lost or stolen, the owner can remotely lock it or erase all data while Activation Lock remains in place, making the device useless to anyone else.

For second-hand buyers, this is the single most important check you can perform. A device with an active iCloud lock is essentially a paperweight unless the previous owner removes it.

iCloud Status Types

Clean / OFF
Find My is disabled — safe to buy
Locked / ON
Find My is active — requires owner credentials
Lost Mode
Owner has flagged the device as lost

Buyer's rule: Never purchase an Apple device without first verifying that iCloud Activation Lock is OFF and Find My is disabled. If the seller cannot prove this, walk away.

Already locked out? If a device shows the “locked to owner” screen, our iCloud Activation Lock removal can permanently remove it by IMEI — or read the iPhone locked to owner guide first.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I buy an iCloud-locked device?
You will not be able to set up or use the device. It will remain stuck on the Activation Lock screen asking for the previous owner's Apple ID and password. The only legitimate way to remove it is for the original owner to sign out of iCloud or remove the device from their account.
Can iCloud Activation Lock be removed?
Yes, but only by the original owner signing out of their Apple ID, or through Apple support with proof of purchase. We also offer iCloud unlock services for legitimate cases. Third-party bypass tools exist but are not recommended as they often don't survive iOS updates.
Is Find My iPhone the same as iCloud lock?
They are directly connected. When you enable Find My iPhone, iCloud Activation Lock is automatically turned on. You cannot have Activation Lock without Find My being enabled.
Does this check work for Apple Watch and iPad?
Yes. iCloud Activation Lock applies to all Apple devices including iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac. Our check works with any Apple device IMEI or serial number.
Is the iCloud check free?
Guest users receive one free check per day. For unlimited checks, create a free account or purchase credits for bulk verification.
What does FMI mean?
FMI stands for Find My iPhone, Apple's device-tracking feature. When FMI is ON, iCloud Activation Lock is active and the device cannot be set up without the original Apple ID. When FMI is OFF, the device is clean and ready for a new owner. You will see the terms FMI and Find My used interchangeably.
How do I check FMI status on an iPhone?
Enter the device IMEI or serial number in the checker above. It queries Apple's activation servers and reports whether FMI is ON or OFF, along with Lost Mode status. You do not need the device in your hand, and you do not need the owner's Apple ID — the IMEI alone is enough.
How do I tell if iCloud is ON or OFF?
An iCloud check returns one of two states. iCloud ON means Find My and Activation Lock are enabled and the previous owner is still linked to the device. iCloud OFF means the device has been signed out and can be activated normally. Always confirm OFF before paying for a second-hand Apple device.
How do I check Activation Lock status before buying?
Ask the seller for the IMEI (dial *#06# or look in Settings, General, About) and run it through the activation lock checker above. A result of Activation Lock ON means the device is tied to somebody else's Apple ID, and no amount of resetting will clear it.
