How IMEI Validation Works

Every genuine IMEI number must pass the Luhn algorithm — a checksum formula used to validate identification numbers. The 15th digit of an IMEI is a calculated check digit that must satisfy this formula.

If the check digit doesn't match, the IMEI is either incorrectly typed or fabricated. Our validator runs this check instantly and also cross-references the first 8 digits (the TAC code) against our device database.

A valid IMEI must be exactly 15 digits, pass the Luhn checksum, and have a TAC prefix that exists in the GSMA registry.
