What is iCloud Activation Lock?
iCloud Activation Lock is Apple's anti-theft feature. It's automatically enabled on every iPhone when "Find My iPhone" is turned on — which it is by default on every iPhone sold since iOS 7. The lock ties the device to the owner's Apple ID. If someone tries to erase or set up the device without signing in with the original Apple ID, the device is locked.
This is a powerful security feature. But it creates a significant problem in the second-hand market: sellers frequently forget to sign out of iCloud before selling. Sometimes they deliberately misrepresent the device's status. Either way, the buyer is left holding a device they can't use.
Why do sellers forget to remove iCloud?
The most common reason is simply oversight. Apple's sell-your-iPhone process involves several steps: back up the device, sign out of Apple ID, erase the device. Many sellers skip one or more of these steps, particularly the "sign out of Apple ID" part, which must be done before erasing.
Other times, sellers erase the device but don't sign out first — which means Activation Lock remains active even on a factory-fresh device. The new owner hits the lock screen on first setup.
Less commonly, sellers know the device is locked and sell it anyway, hoping the buyer won't notice until after the transaction is complete.
Your options when you receive an iCloud-locked iPhone
Option 1: Contact the seller
Your first step should always be to contact the seller and ask them to remove the device from their iCloud account. They can do this remotely without needing the phone — they simply sign in to iCloud.com, go to Find My, select the device, and remove it.
The problem: this relies on the seller being cooperative and still having access to their Apple ID. If they've changed their credentials, forgotten their password, or simply stopped responding, you're stuck.
When to try this: Always try first. If the seller is responsive and the sale was recent, this is the quickest resolution.
When to give up: If the seller isn't responding after 24–48 hours, or if they've told you they no longer have access to the Apple ID, move on to your other options.
Option 2: Seek a refund or chargeback
If the seller misrepresented the device as being iCloud-free and you paid through a platform like eBay, PayPal, or a credit card, you may be entitled to a refund through the buyer protection scheme.
eBay's Money Back Guarantee covers "item not as described" which includes iCloud-locked devices sold without disclosure. PayPal Buyer Protection works similarly. Credit card chargebacks are an option if those routes fail.
When to try this: If the sale was within the platform's dispute window (typically 30–180 days depending on the platform and payment method).
When this doesn't work: Private sales with cash or bank transfer typically have no buyer protection. In these cases, you need a technical solution.
Option 3: Visit the Apple Store
Apple can remove Activation Lock in specific circumstances — primarily when you can provide original proof of purchase from Apple (or an authorised reseller) that matches the device's serial number.
If you purchased the device second-hand, the original receipt is in the seller's name. Apple will not remove Activation Lock based on your receipt for the second-hand purchase — only the original Apple sale record counts.
When this works: If you can obtain the original purchase receipt from the seller, or if you bought the device new and are locked out of your own Apple ID.
When this doesn't work: For most second-hand purchases where you don't have the original retail receipt.
