The two locks Apple actually uses
Apple uses two distinct security systems that often get confused:
iCloud Activation Lock is the security feature that ties an iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, or Mac to a specific Apple ID via Find My. When the device is erased or restored, it asks for that original Apple ID and password before it will activate. You see this on the setup screen as the "Activate iPhone" message with the previous owner's email partly hidden.
iCloud Account Lock is when an iPhone is signed into someone's Apple ID and Find My is on, but the device is fully booted and usable. The previous owner can remotely erase, lock, or display a message on it because their Apple ID is still attached.
The two locks have different triggers, different consequences, and different fixes.
What "iCloud Unlock" means
iCloud Unlock specifically refers to permanently bypassing the Activation Lock screen so the device can be reactivated and used again — without the original Apple ID password. This is the service you need when:
- You bought a second-hand iPhone and the seller is unreachable
- You inherited a device from a relative who has passed away
- You forgot your own Apple ID password and can no longer recover it
- The device was wiped before being given to you and now shows the Activate iPhone screen

What "iCloud Removal" means
iCloud Removal usually refers to one of two simpler processes that do not require any third-party service:
Self-removal by the original owner — if you still have the original Apple ID password, you can remove iCloud at any time by signing into appleid.apple.com and removing the device from your account, or by using "Remove from Account" in Find My on a device you still control. This is free and instant.
Local sign-out — if a device is fully booted and accessible, the current owner can sign out of iCloud from Settings > [Apple ID] > Sign Out, then erase the device. This removes the iCloud account from the device but does NOT remove Activation Lock if Find My was enabled — the next person who boots the device will still see the activation screen.
In other words: iCloud Removal is what you do when you have access to the Apple ID. iCloud Unlock is what you need when you don't.
Quick decision flow
- Can you sign into the Apple ID currently linked to the device? → iCloud Removal — do it yourself for free.
- Is the device asking for someone else's Apple ID on the activation screen, and you cannot reach that person? → iCloud Unlock — paid service.
- Is the device booted and usable, but you can see a different person's email under Settings > Apple ID? → That's an active iCloud account, not Activation Lock — sign out, erase, then move on.
How to check which lock you actually have
The fastest way to know is to look at the screen:
- "Activate iPhone" with a partly-hidden email and a password field → Activation Lock. Needs iCloud Unlock.
- Settings > Apple ID shows an account → iCloud account is active. Use iCloud Removal (sign out + erase).
- Lock screen with a custom message like "This iPhone is lost, please call…" → Lost Mode is active, the device is locked remotely. Cannot be bypassed without the original owner — even an iCloud Unlock service generally cannot remove this state.
