Standard repair is designed to keep your data. If your device needs a deep repair, the tool says so up front and warns you that it erases the phone — you choose whether to continue.
That is usually the cable or the port. Use the cable that came with the phone, plug directly into the computer rather than a hub, and unlock the screen if it still turns on. The tool walks through this before it gives up.
