Some tools are Windows-only where the underlying support does not exist on macOS. Each tool page says which platforms it covers before you buy, and so does the table further down this page.
What you need at the other end of the cable
A cable that carries data
Plenty of charging cables move power and nothing else. If the computer never sees the phone, this is the first thing to change.
A direct USB port
Hubs, docks and monitor ports drop devices mid-session. Straight into the computer is more reliable.
Free space on the computer
Recovery and backup write what they find to your disk. Allow room for whatever you are pulling off the phone.
Administrator rights, on Windows
The first run installs the drivers that let Windows talk to the phone, which needs an administrator account.

If the screen still works, unlock it and approve the "Trust this computer" prompt. Locked-out devices have their own path.

Checking what you downloaded
Each build's SHA-256 is published on its download page. Compare it against the file you received before you run it — on macOS with shasum -a 256, on Windows with certutil -hashfile. If the two do not match, the file did not come from us intact and should be deleted.
Removing it
On Windows, uninstall it from Settings → Apps → Installed apps. On macOS, drag the application from Applications to the Bin. Anything you exported — recovered files, backups — is yours and stays where you saved it; removing the application does not touch it.
What it will not do
- Repair physical damage. Water and drops need a workshop, not software.
- Release a phone locked to somebody else's account. That is theirs to release.
- Require a jailbreak or root. Nothing here asks you to modify the phone that way.
