iPad Coverage

iPad Warranty Explained

Every iPad ships with Apple's one-year limited warranty covering manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship under normal use. The warranty covers the iPad itself, the battery (if it falls below 80% capacity due to defect), the charging cable, and the power adapter — for one full year from the original retail purchase date.

AppleCare+ for iPad extends standard coverage with up to 2 additional years of hardware protection plus accidental damage coverage — particularly valuable for a device designed to be carried, shared, and used near liquids. AppleCare+ covers two incidents of accidental damage every twelve months, each subject to a service fee ($49 for screen damage, $99 for other damage on most models).

Our check confirms your exact iPad model, the original purchase date, the standard warranty expiry date, and whether AppleCare+ is active. This is essential when buying refurbished or second-hand iPads — you can verify the seller's warranty claims before parting with money.

Supported iPad Models

iPad Pro M4 (2024)
iPad Pro M2 / M1
iPad Pro 12.9"
iPad Pro 11"
iPad Air M2
iPad Air (4th–5th gen)
iPad (10th gen)
iPad (7th–9th gen)
iPad mini 6 / mini 7
iPad mini 4 / 5

Tip: Find the serial number in Settings → General → About. On cellular iPads you can also use the IMEI (dial nothing — open the same screen to see it). On Wi-Fi only iPads, the serial is the only identifier.

Coverage Windows

Warranty Coverage by Plan

Apple offers three protection tiers for iPad. Knowing which one your device has determines what's covered, what's excluded, and what each repair will cost.

Standard Apple Warranty
1 year
  • Manufacturing defects
  • Battery (≥80% capacity)
  • Included accessories
  • 90-day phone support

Free, automatic with every iPad. Does not cover accidental damage.

AppleCare+
2 years (extended)
  • All standard warranty terms
  • Up to 2 accidents per 12 months
  • Battery service if <80%
  • 24/7 priority Apple support

Service fee per incident applies. Available within 60 days of iPad purchase.

AppleCare+ with Theft & Loss
2 years (extended)
  • All AppleCare+ benefits
  • Up to 2 theft/loss claims per year
  • Find My must be active
  • Available US only

Higher monthly premium. Replacement device fee applies on each claim.

Buying Used

Buying a Second-hand iPad

Before you pay for a used iPad, run three checks: warranty, activation lock, and blacklist. Sellers often claim AppleCare+ coverage that has already expired, or list iPads that are still iCloud-locked to the previous owner — making the device unusable.

Use this iPad warranty checker to confirm coverage, then run an iCloud / Find My check to verify the device is fully signed out, and a lost & stolen database check to make sure it isn't reported as stolen. Together these three checks take under a minute and protect you from the most common iPad resale scams.

Out of Warranty?

Out-of-Warranty Repair Costs

Once your iPad is out of warranty and without AppleCare+, Apple charges a flat-rate "service" fee for hardware repairs. Typical out-of-warranty pricing (US, 2026): screen replacement on a current-generation iPad ranges from $199 (iPad mini) to $849 (12.9" iPad Pro). Battery service is around $99–$179 depending on model.

Apple-authorised independent repair providers can sometimes offer lower prices for the same genuine parts. Third-party non-authorised repairs are cheaper still but will void the warranty on the components touched and may break Face ID, True Tone, or Apple Pencil features.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the warranty on a new iPad?
Every new iPad ships with Apple's one-year limited warranty starting from the original retail purchase date. AppleCare+ for iPad extends the hardware coverage to a total of two years and adds accidental damage protection, with up to two incidents covered every 12 months for a service fee.
How do I check if my iPad is still under warranty?
Enter your iPad serial number into our free warranty checker above. The serial number is in Settings > General > About. The tool returns the original purchase date, warranty expiry date, AppleCare+ status, and whether the device is currently eligible for free or discounted Apple service.
Where do I find my iPad serial number?
Open Settings > General > About on your iPad — the serial number is listed there alongside the model identifier. You can also find it printed on the original retail packaging, on the back of the iPad in tiny text near the bottom edge, or via your Apple ID account at appleid.apple.com if the iPad is signed in.
Does iPad warranty cover a cracked screen?
No. Apple's standard one-year warranty covers manufacturing defects only, not accidental damage. A cracked screen counts as accidental damage and is excluded. AppleCare+ does cover screen damage — typically with a $49 service fee per incident on most iPad models.
Can I check warranty for a Wi-Fi only iPad?
Yes. Wi-Fi only iPads use the serial number for warranty lookup since they have no IMEI. Cellular iPads have both a serial and an IMEI — either can be used. Our tool accepts both formats automatically.
Does the iPad warranty transfer when I sell it?
Yes. Apple's standard limited warranty stays with the device, not the owner. The remaining warranty period transfers automatically to the new owner — no Apple paperwork required. AppleCare+ also transfers with the device when sold, including any remaining accidental damage incidents for the current 12-month window.
What does AppleCare+ cost for iPad?
AppleCare+ for iPad pricing varies by model. As of 2026, monthly pricing ranges from roughly $3.99/month (iPad mini, standard iPad) to $7.99/month (iPad Pro 12.9"). One-time two-year coverage ranges from $79 to $149 depending on iPad model. You can buy AppleCare+ within 60 days of your iPad purchase — Apple will run a diagnostic before accepting late enrollment.
My iPad warranty just expired — what should I do?
You have a few options: (1) If you still have AppleCare+, your coverage is active and you can claim repairs at the discounted service fee. (2) If standard warranty just expired and the iPad is otherwise healthy, paid Apple repair is available at fixed rates. (3) For older iPads, third-party repair shops can replace screens and batteries far cheaper, though this voids any remaining Apple service eligibility.
Is iPad warranty international?
iPad hardware warranty is generally honoured globally for cellular models with global LTE/5G bands, but Apple may require the device to be returned to its country of original sale for service if no equivalent model exists in the country where service is requested. AppleCare+ is country-bound — service is only available in the country where AppleCare+ was originally purchased.
